Life Sentence for Man Convicted in 2020 Ocala Murder

A jury delivered a guilty verdict on Wednesday, May 7th, in the 2020 murder case of 44-year-old David Vega. Stanley Summer Jr., 49, was found guilty of Premeditated First-Degree Murder with a Firearm after a brief deliberation. Following the verdict, Judge McCourt sentenced Summer to life in prison.

Chief Assistant State Attorney Walter Forgie stated, “Justice was served today in this case with the defendant serving life for taking the life of another. Our office is grateful to the jury for their service and to the law enforcement officers and prosecutors who worked tirelessly to bring this case to a just conclusion.”

On November 11, 2020, the Ocala Police Department (OPD) responded to a reported shooting at a residence off NW 16th Place in Ocala. Upon arrival, officers discovered the victim, David Vega, deceased on the carport floor with a gunshot wound to his head.

A witness at the home reported hearing a “pop” before Summer walked through the hallway, saying “someone was shot outside.” The witness then found Vega on the ground and called 9-1-1.

Exterior security camera footage showed Summer walking past the camera in the carport before Vega approached. A verbal altercation was audible before Summer left the carport and entered the house. Vega was not seen leaving the carport area or reappearing on the recordings. The witness then exited the home and found Vega before contacting law enforcement.

Summer, who had fled the scene, was later apprehended and charged with Vega’s murder.

Assistant State Attorneys Amy Berndt and Toby Hunt successfully prosecuted the case. The State Attorney’s Office also commended the diligent work of OPD Detectives M. Coughlin and D. Collier.
