The Nassau County Sheriff’s Office has arrested Charles Kirkman III, 63, following an incident involving alleged racial slurs, the discharge of a firearm, and a six-hour standoff at his Yulee residence.
Deputies responded to a call regarding shots fired on Branch Creek Drive in Yulee at approximately 7:45 p.m. on Sunday, May 18. Upon arrival, a witness reported that Kirkman was yelling racial slurs and firing a handgun into the air.
As deputies established a perimeter around Kirkman’s home, he attempted to leave in a vehicle. When deputies approached the car, Kirkman retreated back inside the residence.
A command post was established, and investigators spent several hours attempting to make contact with Kirkman. He reportedly acknowledged that he was the only person inside the home.
Just after 2:19 a.m. on Monday, May 19, over six hours after the initial call, investigators deployed less lethal force and gained entry to the residence.
Kirkman was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries. No deputies or members of the public were harmed during the incident. He was booked into the Nassau County Jail and Detention Facility this morning, with his bond set at over $50,000.
Kirkman faces charges of aggravated assault and discharging a firearm.
