The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) is investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred on May 14, 2025, on Lenox Avenue, resulting in the death of 44-year-old Calixto Benvenutti. The JSO has released the video of the shooting.
The incident began the night before, around 8:20 p.m. on May 13, when patrol officers responded to multiple 911 calls about a man firing a gun. Officers arrived and saw Benvenutti on the porch of a trailer holding a firearm. He went inside the trailer after officers ordered him to disarm and come out.
An arrest warrant was issued, and SWAT officers responded to the scene. Despite repeated commands throughout the night, Benvenutti refused to surrender. At one point, he emerged from the trailer, fired a shot into the ground, and returned inside.
The standoff continued into the early morning of May 14. Benvenutti eventually came out of the trailer again, picked up a large stick, and began walking toward another trailer. As SWAT Detectives McCranie and Lyons approached him on foot and Detective Crews remained in an armored vehicle, Benvenutti dropped the stick, pulled a concealed gun from his waistband, and advanced while armed.
All three officers fired their rifles, striking him. Officers rendered aid, but Benvenutti was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
The State Attorney’s Office will conduct an independent review of the shooting. JSO will follow with an internal investigation and a Response to Resistance Board review before submitting findings to the Sheriff.
