State Attorney Melissa Nelson announced that a Duval County jury has found 32-year-old Marlon Ramel Sago guilty of Attempted Second-Degree Murder in connection with the 2021 shooting of a man at the Merrill Road and Interstate 295 interchange in Arlington.
With the conviction, Sago faces up to life in Florida State Prison, with a 25-year minimum mandatory sentence. The Honorable Judge Tatiana Salvador will set the sentencing date at a later time.
The incident occurred on Nov. 3, 2021. According to investigators, the male victim was sitting in traffic when he was shot by Sago. The victim pursued the shooter’s vehicle and intentionally crashed into the rear of the suspect’s SUV to stop him from escaping. Sago then fled the vehicle and ran west on Merrill Road toward a nearby gas station.
Witnesses at the scene identified Sago as the shooter and reported he was wearing a red shirt and a hat. The SUV used in the incident was registered to Sago’s ex-girlfriend. A search of the vehicle uncovered multiple shell casings, a black gun holster, and a receipt from a fast-food restaurant in Downtown Jacksonville.
Surveillance footage from the restaurant showed Sago in the red shirt driving the same SUV. The red shirt and hat were later recovered near the gas station along with a 9mm pistol in a nearby retention pond. DNA from the shirt and a straw found in the SUV matched Sago. Ballistics confirmed that the pistol matched the shell casings found in the car.
The case was investigated by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and prosecuted by Assistant State Attorneys Elizabeth Brown and Rachel Allison.
