Gunshot Detection Leads to Arrest of Armed 18-Year-Old in Lake City

On Wednesday, June 18, 2025, at approximately 3:07 a.m., Lake City Police officers responded to the area of 296 SW Nassau Street following a gunshot detection alert from the FLOCK safety system.

While canvassing the area, officers heard two additional gunshots to the southwest. A second alert was received for 654 SW Baya Drive. Officers responded and observed two individuals walking on the sidewalk. During contact, one individual lifted his shirt, revealed a firearm in his waistband, and removed it. Officers issued verbal commands, and the subject complied.

The individual was identified as 18-year-old Chase Nicholas Harris. He was detained for officer safety and read his Miranda Rights. Harris initially claimed he had found the firearm and it discharged accidentally. A second individual, a 13-year-old juvenile, initially gave a similar account but later stated that Harris had fired the weapon multiple times—once near the Napa Auto Parts store on SW Nassau Street and again along SW Baya Drive.

Upon further questioning, Harris admitted to discharging the firearm at both locations. Officers recovered three spent 9mm shell casings at each scene, matching the ammunition found in the firearm Harris possessed. The weapon, a magazine, and additional live rounds were collected as evidence.

The juvenile was released to a parent. Harris was arrested and transported to the Columbia County Detention Center.
