Volusia County Grand Jury Indicts Man for Toddler’s Hot Truck Death, Another for Child Sex Abuse

A Volusia County Grand Jury convened this week, handing down indictments Wednesday morning in two separate cases involving severe child-related offenses, including a charge of First-Degree Murder.

43-year-old Gregory Allen Harris of Murray, KY, was indicted on multiple counts of child sexual abuse. He faces two counts of Sexual Battery on a victim less than 12 years of age, two counts of Lewd/Lascivious Molestation on a victim less than 12 years of age, and one count of Lewd/Lascivious Exhibition on a victim less than 12 years of age. Harris is accused of committing these crimes over a two-year period. His case was investigated by the Port Orange Police Department with assistance from the Calloway County Sheriff’s Office in Kentucky.

In the second case, 33-year-old Scott Gardner of Ormond Beach, FL, was indicted on charges of Felony First-Degree Murder, Aggravated Child Abuse, and Neglect of a Child Causing Great Bodily Harm. Gardner is accused of leaving his 18-month-old son in a hot truck for three hours on June 6, 2025, while he was reportedly getting a haircut and drinking at a bar in Ormond Beach. Medical personnel estimate the child had been deceased for at least an hour by the time he arrived at the hospital. The Ormond Beach Police Department and the Volusia Sheriff’s Office investigated Gardner’s case.
