Crystal River Bank Robbery Suspect Captured Within Seven Hours

A 54-year-old man identified as William Burton Clarkson, also known as “Texas Billy,” was arrested Thursday, July 10, 2025, following an armed robbery at Capital City Bank in Crystal River.

At approximately 9:40 a.m., Clarkson entered the bank at 101 SE Hwy 19, displayed a handgun, and demanded money from a teller. He fled on foot with approximately $2,000. Witnesses described him as a white male wearing a white shirt, blue jeans, sunglasses, boots, and sporting long hair in a ponytail.

Surveillance images released to the public led to multiple tips through Crime Stoppers identifying Clarkson, a resident of Inglis. Investigators tracked him to Scooter Haven RV Park, where they located a vehicle registered in Texas matching his description.

A cooperating witness who confronted Clarkson after recognizing him from the online release helped facilitate his peaceful surrender to deputies at the Inglis Food Ranch in Levy County.

Detectives from both Citrus and Levy counties executed search warrants at Scooter Haven and recovered evidence linked to the robbery. Investigators also believe Clarkson attempted to enter GTE Financial shortly before the robbery, disguised as a utility worker. A reflective vest and hard hat were found in his truck.

Clarkson was transported to the Levy County Jail and booked on one count of Robbery with a Firearm. His bond was set at none.

Anyone with additional information is asked to contact the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office at (352) 249-2790 or Crime Stoppers of Citrus County at 1-888-ANY-TIPS.
