Two Suspects Identified in Gainesville Shooting; One Accused of Armed Threat Toward Witness

GAINESVILLE, FL – On Wednesday, July 2, 2025, at approximately 10:45 p.m., officers with the Gainesville Police Department responded to a shooting in the Duval Heights neighborhood near NE 24th Street.

Upon arrival, officers located a male victim suffering from a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. The victim was treated at the scene and later transported to a local medical facility for additional care.

During the investigation, officers identified 18-year-old Kelvin Tay’sean Baker as one of the suspects. He was located and detained at his residence in the 1100 block of NE 24th Street.

Authorities also identified a second suspect, 20-year-old Xavier Taylor Hawkins, who allegedly fled the scene following the shooting. Investigators say Hawkins entered a vehicle occupied by a witness, brandished a firearm, and demanded to be driven away from the area. During the incident, Hawkins allegedly threatened the witness, warning them not to speak to anyone and placing the individual in fear for their life.

Chief Moya stated, “We’re working hand in hand with the gun violence prevention team because reducing crime takes collaboration, not just enforcement. We’re using data, community partnerships, and focused strategies to make our neighborhoods safer for everyone.”

The investigation remains ongoing.
