GAINESVILLE, FL – James Cleveland Perry, 61, was arrested Wednesday morning, July 15, after allegedly battering a victim, preventing them from calling for help, and falsely imprisoning them in a residence in the 1000 block of SW 59th Terrace.
Deputies responded to a call for service in the early morning hours and made contact with the victim, who reported being struck by Perry. The victim sustained visible injuries to their face and head consistent with a physical assault.
Preliminary investigation revealed that after the altercation, the victim attempted to leave, but Perry allegedly blocked the exit and took their phone, preventing them from contacting law enforcement. The victim eventually managed to flee to a nearby residence and call 911.
Deputies, upon arriving at the initial scene, attempted to make contact with Perry via public address announcements. Receiving no response, they cleared the residence and determined Perry was no longer at the location, initiating a search of the surrounding area.
Later that morning, shortly before 10:30 a.m., Perry was located in the 1000 block of SW 61st Street and taken into custody without incident. During the arrest, Perry claimed the victim’s injuries were a result of accidental falls due to intoxication.
Based on the investigation, Perry was arrested and charged with Hindering Communication with Law Enforcement, Battery Touch or Strike, and False Imprisonment of a Person.
Authorities commended the deputies for their professionalism and persistence throughout the multi-hour investigation, highlighting their collaborative efforts across multiple shifts that led to the successful apprehension and support for the victim.
