ST. JOHNS COUNTY, FL – A driver was arrested by St. Johns County deputies on Sunday, August 10, after being caught speeding at 112 mph in a 70 mph zone on I-95. The driver, D’Quavis Douse, 28, was observed changing lanes at a high rate of speed and nearly colliding with other vehicles.
Douse was charged with Operating a vehicle at more than 100+ mph in a manner that threatened people or property, a new offense under Florida’s Dangerous Excessive Speeding Law (FSS 316.1922), which took effect on July 1.
Under the new law, a person commits dangerous excessive speeding if they:
- Exceed the speed limit by 50 mph or more.
- Drive 100 mph or more while passing another vehicle or changing lanes.
- Drive 35 mph over the speed limit on any street other than a highway.
The law imposes serious penalties for convictions, including up to 90 days in jail and a $500 fine for a first offense. Repeat offenders face up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine. Multiple convictions within a five-year period can also lead to a driver’s license being revoked for at least 180 days.
