HERNANDO COUNTY, FL – The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office has arrested Nita Hope Beckwith Melaugh, 57, the former Executive Officer of the Hernando Builder’s Association, on charges of Grand Theft. Melaugh, a seven-year employee of the organization, is accused of illegally using over $43,000 in association funds for personal expenses.
The investigation began on February 28, 2025, after the Hernando Builder’s Association reported a possible theft of funds. According to detectives, between January 2023 and November 2024, Melaugh allegedly used $43,952.91 of the organization’s money for unauthorized goods and services.
Investigators found records of purchases linked to Melaugh’s personal accounts, including women’s clothing from online retailers and medical co-pays. On August 7, Melaugh provided a statement to the Sheriff’s Office, offering explanations for some of the charges. She was subsequently placed under arrest.
Melaugh was transported to the Hernando County Detention Center and held without bond until her first appearance in court. The Hernando Builder’s Association, which represents the interests of the building industry in Hernando County, has been cooperative throughout the investigation.
