JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – On Tuesday, August 13, 2025, around 7 a.m., Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office officers responded to a call involving a man with mental health concerns in the Longbranch area.
Officers learned the 30-year-old Black male suspect had attempted to set a home on East 16th Street on fire and was armed with a knife. The suspect fled the area and was later spotted by a K9 officer walking along East 25th Street near Buckman Street.
The officer called the suspect by name and instructed him to stop, warning that the K9 would be released. The suspect did not comply and began running while holding the knife. When the suspect twice threatened the officer by pushing the knife toward him, the officer, identified as C. Bumgarner, fired his weapon.
Additional officers arrived, secured the knife, and rendered emergency medical aid, but the suspect did not survive. The next of kin have not yet been notified.
This marks the 13th officer-involved shooting of the year for the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. The officer involved was unharmed. The State Attorney’s Office is conducting an investigation on scene, after which the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office will complete its own review.
