Daytona Beach Man Sentenced to Life for 2021 Shooting Death

This week, James Simmons entered a no-contest plea to Second-Degree Murder (Firearm) and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted In-State Felon, and was sentenced to life in prison.

On July 9, 2021, Simmons was captured on video surveillance and seen by multiple witnesses lingering around a Daytona Beach apartment complex while carrying a handgun. After about an hour, the victim exited his apartment, and Simmons shot him in the head. The victim died at the scene.

Simmons was arrested a few days later at a Daytona Beach hotel, where officers recovered the firearm used in the shooting.

“Another violent offender off the streets. Our commitment to keep you safe is unwavering,” said State Attorney R.J. Larizza.

The case was investigated by the Daytona Beach Police Department and prosecuted by Assistant State Attorney Andrew Urbanak. Judge Kathryn Weston presided over the sentencing.
