Duval County Man Convicted of Attempted Murder, Armed Robbery After Date Dispute

Jamal Moreland Jr. was found guilty by a Duval County jury of Attempted First-Degree Murder and Attempted Armed Robbery, State Attorney Melissa Nelson announced. Moreland faces up to life in Florida State Prison. Sentencing will be handled by the Honorable London Kite at a later date.

The incident occurred on February 19, 2023, after Moreland went on a date arranged through a dating app. The victim drove Moreland to a bowling alley, liquor store, and a restaurant. Following an argument over paying for food, the victim ended the date and dropped Moreland off at his home shortly before 1 a.m.

Moments later, Moreland texted the victim requesting $45. When the victim refused, he returned to Moreland’s house. Moreland entered the front passenger seat of the victim’s truck, brandished a gun, and demanded money. After the victim said he did not have the cash, Moreland fired two shots inside the truck. The victim drove away and heard two additional shots before crashing on Jones Road. He was transported to a hospital with gunshot injuries.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office investigated the case, and Assistant State Attorneys Crystal Ganpath-Freed and Katherina Brown prosecuted.
