ORLANDO, Fla. – The Orlando Police Department is investigating an officer-involved shooting that left a man dead early Friday morning near West Amelia Street and Chatham Avenue.
At approximately 3:40 a.m. on August 22, officers responded to a disturbance between roommates. While speaking with those involved, a white male in his 40s, who appeared to be sleeping in Luminary Green Park, suddenly charged at officers with a pair of scissors.
Police say the suspect made a slashing motion as he advanced. Officers gave repeated commands for him to drop the weapon, but he refused and continued moving toward them. The suspect was then shot and died at the scene.
Investigators confirmed the man was not connected to the original roommate dispute. His criminal history includes burglary with assault and battery, grand theft, and meth possession.
The officers involved were not injured. They have been placed on administrative leave while the Florida Department of Law Enforcement conducts an independent review, followed by the State Attorney’s Office.
