Defendant: Eric Baker

Gainesville Man Sentenced to 15 Years in Fatal 2024 Hit-and-Run Crash

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – On Tuesday, August 26, 2025, 22-year-old Eric Baker pled guilty to multiple charges stemming from a deadly crash in Gainesville last summer. Baker was sentenced to 15 years in the Florida Department of Corrections, followed by 10 years of supervised release.

He pled guilty to the following charges:

  • Fleeing and Attempting to Allude
  • Vehicular Homicide – Failure to Render Aid
  • Reckless Driving Causing Serious Bodily Injury
  • Leaving the Scene of a Crash Involving Death

The charges stem from an incident that occurred on the evening of Friday, July 26, 2024. At approximately 6:40 p.m., Gainesville Police officers conducted a traffic stop on a grey Infiniti sedan for multiple traffic violations. As officers approached, the vehicle sped away at a high rate of speed.

Officers did not pursue the Infiniti. Moments later, the vehicle crashed into a red Dodge sedan at the intersection of NW 10th Avenue and NW 6th Street.

Alachua County Sheriff’s Deputies in an unmarked unit and Gainesville Police officers rushed to the scene to render aid. The driver of the Dodge was pronounced dead, while three passengers inside the Infiniti sustained serious injuries and were transported to a local hospital.

Baker fled the crash scene on foot but was apprehended a short time later by members of the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office and Gainesville Police K9 teams.

“This was a tragic and avoidable incident that cost an innocent life,” Gainesville Police officials stated following the sentencing. “We hope this brings some measure of justice and closure to the victim’s family.”
