GAINESVILLE, Fla.—A Gainesville man is facing 22 charges of possession of child pornography after an investigation prompted by a CyberTip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC).
On Wednesday, August 27, the Alachua County Sheriff and Gainesville Police Department (GPD) ICAC Task Force, with assistance from ASO SWAT, executed a warrant at a home at 1209 SE 27th Street. The warrant was based on a lead that a user of a cloud storage provider had uploaded child sexual abuse material (CSAM).
The GPD investigation, led by Detective Donna Montague, identified Alex Boatwright, 34, as the likely account holder. During an interview, Boatwright told police he knew why they were there, referencing an “email that got locked out.” He claimed to have no interest in the illegal content, but a relative told police that Boatwright had said he “accidentally downloaded the illegal content while downloading at pornography.”
Several account identifiers and a cell phone IMEI provided by Boatwright matched information from the cloud storage provider’s records for the suspect account. All of Boatwright’s electronic devices were seized for a complete forensic analysis.
Based on evidence found in his cloud storage account, Boatwright was arrested and charged with 22 counts of possession of child pornography, including one count involving sexual activities with animals.
The Gainesville Police Department is urging parents to be vigilant about their children’s online activity and to have age-appropriate conversations about the dangers of the internet. The department encourages anyone with questions about the incident to contact Detective Donna Montague.
