Jacksonville Firefighters Save Family, Continue Mission of Prevention

Jacksonville, FL – A house fire in the Division Street neighborhood nearly turned tragic several weeks ago, but the quick response of Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department crews from Fire Station 7 saved three family members trapped inside.

This week, Mayor Donna Deegan and Fire Chief Percy Golden II returned to the same neighborhood—not for an emergency, but to reinforce JFRD’s commitment to fire prevention. Walking door to door with firefighters, they spoke with residents about fire safety and the importance of working smoke alarms.

“Saving lives doesn’t just happen at the scene of a fire,” Chief Golden said. “Prevention saves lives before a fire even starts. Research shows the death rate in reported home fires is 60 percent lower when working smoke alarms are present.”

JFRD’s Fire Prevention Division has been working to make that research a reality across Jacksonville. In Fiscal Year 2024–2025, personnel installed more than 1,100 smoke alarms and replaced more than 300 batteries in homes citywide.

Mayor Deegan stressed how simple the process is for residents. “Each alarm represents a safer family and more time to escape if the unthinkable happens,” she said. “This is about meeting neighbors where they are and helping make every home in Jacksonville safer.”

Homeowners can request a free smoke alarm installation or replacement batteries by calling 904-630-CITY. The Fire Prevention Division will schedule a visit once residents provide their name, address, and contact information.
