Jacksonville Repeat Offender Sentenced to 10 Years for Accessing Child Porn Online

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.—A registered child sex offender has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for accessing child sexual abuse materials (CSAM) online, a violation committed while he was on supervised release for a prior federal conviction.

Chief United States District Judge Marcia Morales Howard sentenced Sean-Michael Smith, 36, of Jacksonville, to 120 months in federal prison. He was also ordered to serve a 15-year term of supervised release and to forfeit the computer device used to commit the crime.

Smith, who was convicted in 2014 of distributing CSAM, was arrested on December 18, 2024, and pleaded guilty on June 11, 2025.

According to court documents, Smith was found to be in violation of his supervised release after he admitted to drawing sketches depicting nude children and accessing the internet several times. During a search of his home on December 10, 2024, Smith admitted to U.S. Probation Officers that he had accessed CSAM in August, September, and December 2024.

An FBI review of the seized device confirmed that Smith had used it to access at least 35 photos depicting the sexual abuse of young children.

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Jacksonville and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney D. Rodney Brown.
