TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Earlier this month, while conducting proactive patrols aimed at preventing violent crime, members of the Tallahassee Police Department’s Violent Crimes Response Team (VCRT) conducted a traffic stop near East Orange Avenue and South Monroe Street.
As detectives approached the vehicle, a juvenile passenger fled on foot. Detectives pursued and quickly took him into custody. During the chase, the juvenile was seen running with a Glock handgun, which he discarded before being apprehended. The firearm was recovered and found to be equipped with an illegal conversion device, commonly referred to as a “switch,” which allows a weapon to operate as a fully automatic firearm.
A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed a second firearm in the driver’s possession. The driver was later identified as a convicted felon.
This was one of several arrests made during the proactive patrol operation, during which officers seized a total of seven firearms, including one that had been reported stolen within the jurisdiction.
“These arrests reflect TPD’s ongoing commitment to removing illegal guns from our streets and protecting the Tallahassee community,” the department said in a statement.
Anyone who observes suspicious activity is urged to contact the Tallahassee Police Department at 850-606-5800, or to remain anonymous by calling Crime Solvers at 850-574-TIPS.
