Miami-Dade Deputy and Two Civilians Honored for Heroic Canal Rescue

The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office recognized Deputy Josue J. Acevedo of the Organized Crimes Bureau with the Bronze Medal of Valor, Lifesaving Award, and Distinguished Deputy of the Month for September 2025 for his extraordinary bravery.

On September 5, 2025, Deputy Acevedo responded to a report of a vehicle submerged in a canal near SW 272 Street and 157 Avenue. Without hesitation, he removed his equipment and dove into the water.

Inside the canal, he joined two civilians, Juan Iglesias and Jose Rodriguez, who were assisting the trapped driver. Together, they freed the victim, moving him to the roof of the vehicle and then to the canal embankment. Deputies Reinaldo Rebollo Jr. and Samantha N. Oliva arrived shortly after to assist. Thanks to their coordinated efforts, the driver was stabilized and breathing by the time Miami-Dade Fire Rescue arrived.

Deputy Acevedo’s quick thinking, selfless actions, and teamwork with community members were instrumental in saving the driver’s life. The Sheriff’s Office commended him for his heroism and dedication to public safety.
