LAKE CITY, FL – Around 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 30, the Columbia County Fire Department responded to a fire alarm at the Columbia County Detention Facility on NW Quinten Street.
According to officials, the alarm was triggered after inmates tampered with an inmate-issued tablet device, causing it to overheat and emit smoke.
As a precaution, inmates from the affected housing area were relocated to another secure section of the jail. Firefighters quickly located the source of the smoke, secured the area, and began ventilating the section before giving an all-clear.
All displaced inmates were returned to their cells without incident, and everyone was safely accounted for.
Authorities confirmed that there was no actual fire inside the facility, and no injuries or damage occurred as a result of the incident.
