University of Florida Police Clarify Halloween Costume Incident Mistaken for Armed Suspect

Gainesville, FL – The University of Florida Police Department (UFPD) responded Thursday morning, October 30, to multiple reports of a possible armed individual near Little Hall on the Gainesville campus.

Around 11 a.m., dispatchers received calls stating that a man was seen carrying what appeared to be a firearm. Officers immediately searched the area, and during the response, a person contacted police saying he believed he matched the description being circulated online.

When officers spoke with the individual, they learned he was dressed as a science fiction character for Halloween and that the “firearm” was actually a water pistol used as part of his costume. UFPD confirmed there was no threat to the campus and that the individual had no intent to alarm or harm anyone.

The department thanked community members for their quick action in reporting the incident, noting that vigilance plays a key role in maintaining campus safety.

UFPD also used the opportunity to remind students, faculty, and staff to exercise caution when choosing costumes and props, especially those that resemble weapons, during Halloween or cosplay events.

“Be safe while celebrating this weekend,” the department said. “And if you see anything suspicious, call 911.”
