Mistrial declared in Tallahassee mother’s case over fentanyl death of 3-year-old

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – A Leon County judge declared a mistrial Thursday, November 6, in the case of Cameren Evans, a Tallahassee woman accused in the 2023 fentanyl death of her three-year-old son.

Jurors deliberated for nearly eight hours before telling the judge they could not reach a unanimous verdict. Prosecutors have confirmed the State intends to retry the case.

Evans faced an aggravated manslaughter charge after her son died from ingesting fentanyl, according to an autopsy. Investigators said she left the child in the care of Tony Balcom, the man she allegedly purchased drugs from. Balcom is facing the same charge.

A new trial date for Evans could be set at her next court hearing on November 17.
