A 68-year-old Jacksonville man is facing a long list of burglary charges after detectives linked him to more than a dozen break-ins at family-owned businesses across the city.
The investigation began last month when District 1 patrol officers responded to a burglary in San Marco. As detectives worked the case, they began receiving additional reports with the same pattern: a front window shattered, a cash box taken, and the suspect gone within seconds.
Investigators later identified the suspect as Arthur Virgil. Detective Higbee led the case, reviewing surveillance footage from impacted businesses and piecing together the series of smash-and-grab burglaries.
On October 21, officers were called to a local restaurant that had just been hit. Detectives believed the suspect was still nearby, located Virgil’s vehicle, and conducted a traffic stop. Inside the vehicle, they found the restaurant’s stolen cash box. Virgil was arrested on the spot.
Virgil has a prior history of similar burglary offenses and previously served time for the same style of crimes. The investigation is ongoing as detectives work to determine whether he may be connected to additional cases.
