A Lake City man is facing multiple charges after officers say he drove onto school property while impaired, damaged a gate and attempted to leave the scene Tuesday night.
Around 8:25 p.m. on November 18, Lake City Police officers responded to the area of SW McFarlane Avenue after receiving a report of a reckless driver. Officers soon spotted a black Ford F-150 leaving the parking lot of Summers Elementary School without headlights and conducted a traffic stop.
The driver, identified as 25-year-old Jacob Ames, showed clear signs of impairment, according to police. Officers said he admitted to drinking, struggled to provide documentation and refused both field sobriety exercises and breath testing.
While speaking with Ames, officers noticed fresh damage to the school’s gate that matched damage on his truck. The school principal later confirmed the gate had been struck recently.
A records check showed Ames had prior DUI-related incidents and a previous refusal to submit to testing. During an inventory of the truck before towing, officers found a mostly empty 12-pack of beer.
Ames was arrested on several charges, including trespassing on school grounds, leaving the scene of a crash with property damage, refusing to submit to DUI testing and DUI. He was also issued a DUI citation.
He was taken to a local hospital for medical clearance before being booked into the Columbia County Jail.
