The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office has arrested three young suspects in connection with the deadly beating of 64-year-old Roger Borkum in downtown Jacksonville. The suspects, ages 13, 16 and 19, are now all charged with murder.
On Sunday, October 19, officers were called to Julia Street for an aggravated battery. When they arrived, they found Borkum suffering from severe injuries after being violently attacked. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he died four days later.
A witness who saw the assault provided officers with descriptions of the three attackers. Thanks to that information, police located the suspects within hours. After a detailed investigation by JSO Homicide detectives and the State Attorney’s Office, the teens were identified as 13-year-old Justin Curry, 16-year-old Robert Pope, and 19-year-old Marcavion Juhmaine Lacey. Detectives noted that Curry was only 12 at the time of the attack.
Pope and Lacey were arrested shortly after Borkum’s death. On November 20, a Duval County grand jury indicted Curry, bringing all three suspects formally under murder charges.
Investigators called the case a painful reminder of how young some violent offenders have become and how deeply these crimes impact families and the community. JSO says it will continue working closely with prosecutors to pursue justice for Borkum.
Law enforcement leaders also urged parents and guardians to stay engaged in their children’s lives and seek out resources that can help keep kids on a safer path before tragedies like this occur.
