GAINESVILLE, FL – On Monday, November 24, 2025, Melinda Marie Waters, 42, was arrested after allegedly stealing a 1997 GMC Sierra from Good Samaritans who had stopped to help her.
The incident occurred on NW CR-231 when drivers saw Waters lying in a ditch. Concerned for her well-being, a passing motorist pulled over to check on her. According to the victim, Waters suddenly got up, entered his truck without permission, and drove away. The victim quickly reported the theft to law enforcement, providing a description of Waters and his vehicle.
Deputies issued a BOLO and canvassed the area. DS S. Pillar spotted the stolen truck on NW 34th Blvd, south of US 441. Before a high-risk traffic stop could be initiated, Waters stopped the truck at 2800 NW 74th Pl. She exited the vehicle and was immediately detained.
Waters was charged with Grand Theft of a Motor Vehicle and her bond was set at $15,000. Authorities remind residents to exercise caution when stopping to help strangers on the road.
