The Martin County Sheriff’s Office says deputies and Stuart Police acted quickly Friday night after spotting a suspicious man following U.S. Congressman Brian Mast during the Stuart Christmas Parade.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, members of Congressman Mast’s team and MCSO command staff noticed the man’s behavior as he moved along the parade route. Officials say he kept his hat pulled low over his face and wore layered clothing, including a long-sleeve shirt and a jacket, despite warm temperatures. His appearance and actions raised immediate concern.
Deputies and Stuart Police officers approached and detained him before he could move farther along the route. During the encounter, investigators say the man was found carrying a firearm and wearing a rifle-rated armored plate vest under his clothing.
He was escorted away from the parade and taken to the Sheriff’s Office for questioning. MCSO Criminal Investigations Detectives interviewed him along with agents from the FBI and Stuart Police investigators. After reviewing the incident, authorities determined there was no legal basis to file charges.
The Sheriff’s Office noted that security plans for large public events like the Christmas Parade are built months in advance and include multiple layers of protection. That planning involves street barriers, uniformed and plain-clothes personnel, tactical teams, drone operations, and air support to ensure families can enjoy the event safely.
Officials say they will continue to prioritize community safety and maintain strong security measures for major public gatherings.
