On December 5, 2025, Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office District 3 patrol officers responded to an emergency after a 16-month-old child was accidentally locked inside a minivan at the St. Johns Town Center.
The child’s mother called 911 after realizing she had left the keys inside the vehicle. With the engine off and the windows rolled up, the inside temperature of the car quickly became dangerous.
Officers acted immediately, breaking the vehicle’s window to safely remove the child, who was showing signs of heat distress but was unharmed.
The JSO reminded the public that even a few minutes in a closed vehicle in Florida heat can be life-threatening, with temperatures inside the car rapidly rising into the triple digits. Officials confirmed this incident was an accident, with no criminal intent involved, and stressed the importance of calling 911 immediately in emergencies.
“The officers’ quick action prevented a potentially tragic outcome,” the JSO said. “Every minute counts when a child is trapped in a hot car.”
