Chiefland, FL – Deputies with the Levy County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call reporting two individuals found deceased inside a Chiefland residence. The caller, who had gone to check on the occupants after not hearing from them for several days, discovered the bodies.
Upon arrival, deputies located a male and a female who had sustained gunshot wounds. Levy County detectives and CSI personnel were called to investigate. Early evidence suggested that the male homeowner, Robert Lee Carter, 58, had fatally shot the female before taking his own life.
However, investigators discovered complicating factors at the scene. Multiple gunshot wounds on Carter and evidence of two different firearm calibers indicated that the original scene had been altered. Further investigation revealed that the individual who discovered the bodies, Gavin Selfridge, 23, of Citrus Springs, had fired his own weapon into Carter’s remains in a fit of anger, contaminating the crime scene and mutilating human remains.
Selfridge was arrested and charged with tampering with evidence and abuse of human remains, with bond set at $250,000. The Levy County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the initial events—a murder-suicide by Carter—were accurate, but Selfridge’s actions had complicated the investigation.
The Sheriff’s Office extended condolences to both families affected by the tragedy.
