Road Rage Gunfire Leaves Teen Wounded, 63-Year-Old Taken Into Custody Near Middleburg

CLAY COUNTY, FL – A 63-year-old man is facing multiple attempted murder charges after deputies say he opened fire on a car carrying three teenagers during a road rage incident that unfolded across several miles in Clay County.

According to the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, the shooting occurred on December 17, 2025, after multiple 911 calls reported an ongoing road rage situation involving gunfire between a black pickup truck and a black sedan. The incident began near the intersection of Branan Field Road and Blanding Boulevard and continued as both vehicles traveled through the area.

Deputies were first directed to the parking lot of HCA Middleburg Emergency, where they found an 18-year-old male suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg. The victim was transported for treatment and is expected to survive. Two other occupants of the sedan, an 18-year-old male and a 17-year-old male, were not injured.

Approximately 10 minutes after the initial calls, deputies located the suspect vehicle traveling westbound on County Road 218 near Bluejay Drive. A traffic stop was conducted near Bluejay Drive and Timberwood Trail, where the driver, identified as Ruben Rodriguez Heredia, was taken into custody without incident.

Detectives and crime scene technicians responded to multiple locations connected to the incident, conducting interviews, executing search warrants, and reviewing security footage. Investigators determined that the suspect and the teenagers did not know each other and that the shooting stemmed solely from a road rage encounter.

Rodriguez Heredia was booked into the Clay County Jail and charged with three counts of attempted murder. His total bond was set at $750,003.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office thanked community members for their assistance in helping locate the suspect vehicle and for their patience during the investigation. Anyone with additional information is encouraged to contact the Sheriff’s Office at 904-264-6512 or submit a tip through the SaferWatch system.
