A Fort White man is in custody following a Christmas Day shooting that left another man critically injured, according to the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies were called to Cullen Avenue in the Town of Fort White on Thursday, December 25, 2025, in reference to a reported shooting. When deputies arrived, they found a white male victim suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the head.
Deputies immediately began lifesaving measures, and Columbia County EMS responded to assist. The victim was transported from the scene and remains hospitalized in critical condition. His identity has not been released as the investigation is ongoing and due to the severity of his injuries.
Investigators detained 53-year-old Johnny McNutt of Fort White at the scene without incident. According to deputies, McNutt admitted to shooting the victim.
Preliminary information indicates that McNutt and the victim had been involved in a physical altercation earlier in the day. After that confrontation, investigators say McNutt retrieved a firearm, returned to where the victim was seated in a chair, and without warning fired a single gunshot to the victim’s head.
Columbia County Sheriff’s Office detectives and crime scene investigators processed the scene, and the investigation remains ongoing.
McNutt has been arrested and is currently being held on a charge of Attempted Second Degree Murder. Authorities stated there is no ongoing threat to the community.
