Tallahassee, Fla. – The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) recently highlighted its major accomplishments in 2025 while outlining plans for continued investments in 2026 to enhance safety, mobility, and economic growth across the state.
In 2025, FDOT responded swiftly to severe weather events, including Winter Storm Enzo in North Florida and heavy rainfall in Central Florida, clearing roadways, repairing damage, and restoring safe travel for communities.
Under the Moving Florida Forward Infrastructure Initiative, major congestion relief projects advanced ahead of schedule. Highlights include:
- New congestion relief lanes on I-4 opened eight months early, reducing travel times by 50 percent for 140,000 daily commuters.
- Progress on the Golden Glades Interchange Project, including 32 new bridges and major freight connectors.
- Breakground on I-75 auxiliary lanes in Ocala and I-275 widening in Pinellas County, projects expected to be completed 10-15 years ahead of schedule and generate billions in economic value.
FDOT also prioritized strengthening Florida’s supply chain by expanding truck parking facilities along the I-4 corridor and investing in storage and movement of construction aggregates, supporting both commerce and safety.
Workforce development remained a focus, with the Florida Transportation Research Institute and Florida Transportation Academy preparing the next generation of transportation professionals. Training programs along the I-4 corridor and statewide workforce initiatives successfully placed hundreds of workers into skilled positions in road and bridge construction.
Safety enhancements included innovative work zone technologies, intersection redesigns, and pedestrian-focused projects. FDOT’s Post Street at Old Roosevelt Rail Safety Project and U.S. 231 at Star Avenue intersection project in Bay County are examples of initiatives improving safety and operations across the state.
Florida continued to lead in aerospace and emerging air mobility. FDOT advanced the construction of the first Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) vertiports at the SunTrax testing facility and laid the groundwork for a statewide network of commercial air-taxi and cargo corridors. Meanwhile, Florida set a new record with 109 space launches in 2025, solidifying its global leadership in aerospace innovation.
Major infrastructure projects completed in 2025 included:
- NASA Causeway Bridge and Howard Frankland Bridge Replacement, increasing capacity and improving evacuation routes.
- Suncoast Parkway Phase 2 and First Coast Expressway expansions, enhancing travel reliability.
- U.S. 1 Jupiter Bridge and I-75 at U.S. 301 Interchange improvements for safer, more efficient regional connectivity.
FDOT also completed projects protecting Florida’s natural beauty and community resilience, including the I-75 Alligator Alley Environmental Education Center and seawall projects along S.R. A1A in Volusia and Monroe Counties.
Looking forward to 2026, FDOT will implement initiatives funded through Governor DeSantis’ proposed $15.4 billion Floridians First Budget, further supporting congestion relief, safety improvements, emerging technologies, and transportation network investments statewide.
FDOT remains committed to connecting communities, advancing infrastructure, and ensuring the safe and efficient movement of people and goods throughout Florida.
