JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office has released preliminary details and body-worn camera video from an officer-involved shooting that occurred on Bradd Avenue in December.
The incident happened late Monday night, December 15, 2025, and into the early morning hours of December 16th. The suspect, identified as 31-year-old Cory Sweeney, was injured during the encounter and remains in stable condition at an area hospital.
According to JSO, the situation began at 9:53 p.m. when Sweeney’s mother called 911, reporting that her son was threatening her. During the call, dispatchers could hear Sweeney making verbal threats before the line was disconnected. When dispatch called back, Sweeney answered and allegedly threatened the dispatcher as well.
Officers responded to the residence on Bradd Avenue, where Sweeney’s mother had already exited the home. She told officers that Sweeney had threatened to stab and kill her and had held a knife to her face. Officers set up a perimeter and attempted to communicate with Sweeney, ordering him to exit the house.
While officers attempted to assess the situation through a window, Sweeney began smashing windows from inside the home. One officer outside was injured by shattered glass. Over the next four hours, officers repeatedly issued loud verbal commands for Sweeney to surrender. During that time, Sweeney allegedly made multiple threats to kill officers.
At one point, Sweeney exited the home wearing a football helmet and carrying a hammer before retreating back inside. Due to his refusal to comply and the continued threats, patrol officers requested assistance from the JSO SWAT Team.
At approximately 3:09 a.m., Sweeney exited the house armed with a large unknown object and appeared to rear back as if preparing to throw it at officers. Two officers, identified as K. Miller and C. Bush, fired their department-issued rifles, striking Sweeney. He retreated briefly into the house before exiting again and being taken into custody.
Sweeney received medical treatment at the scene and was transported to a local hospital. Following the incident, he was arrested on multiple charges, including aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, battery on a law enforcement officer, tampering with a witness, aggravated assault, and domestic battery.
The State Attorney’s Office will conduct an independent review of the shooting to determine whether the officers’ actions were legally justified. JSO will then complete an internal review to determine whether department policies were followed. Both reviews remain ongoing.
