Man Killed After Pulling Gun on Jacksonville Officers During Domestic Call

JACKSONVILLE, FL – Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Undersheriff Shawn Coarsey and Chief Michael Paul released details Tuesday regarding a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred Monday night at an apartment complex in the 13800 block of Egrets Nest Drive, off Gran Bay Parkway.

The incident unfolded around 8:30 p.m. after multiple callers contacted 911 to report a domestic disturbance involving a married couple. One caller, an employee at the apartment complex, told dispatchers she heard a woman screaming and saw her on the hood of a Tesla, banging on the vehicle. According to the caller, the woman eventually got off the car, and the male driver left the complex.

A short time later, the man returned. The same caller reported seeing him with a handgun holstered on his side.

District 3 officers arrived on scene and determined the situation involved a domestic altercation between the husband and wife. Officers separated the couple and first spoke with the wife, who confirmed they had been arguing. She also informed officers that her husband owned two firearms.

After speaking with the woman, officers approached the man to get his account of the incident. As officers made contact, the suspect pulled a gun from his waistband. Both officers immediately fired their weapons, striking the suspect.

Officers and Jacksonville Fire and Rescue personnel rendered aid at the scene. The suspect was transported to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries. He was identified as 34-year-old Daniel Rodriguez.

The officers involved were identified as Officer J. Rodrick, a six-year veteran of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office who has been involved in a prior officer-involved shooting, and Officer J. Milam, a four-year JSO veteran involved in his first officer-involved shooting.

This marks the first officer-involved shooting of 2026 for the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

The Florida State Attorney’s Office is currently conducting an independent investigation. Once that review is complete, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office will carry out its own internal investigation, as required by policy.
