Arrest Made in Summer Shooting That Killed 18-Year-Old in Jacksonville

JACKSONVILLE, FL – JSO Detectives have made an arrest in the fatal shooting of an 18-year-old that occurred last summer at an apartment complex on Cleveland Road.

On Wednesday, June 11, 2025, District 6 patrol officers responded to a quadruple shooting at the complex. Three victims survived their injuries, but Marcus Thompson, 18, later died from a gunshot wound.

The department’s Homicide Unit launched a months-long investigation, interviewing witnesses and reviewing evidence from the scene. That work led detectives to identify 22-year-old Samuel Chaney as the suspect.

Chaney was taken into custody earlier today and charged with Thompson’s murder. Investigators confirmed Chaney was already incarcerated on charges related to an unrelated case at the time of his arrest in this investigation.

Officials said the case reflects sustained investigative efforts to bring accountability, even months after a crime occurs.

“Our hearts go out to Marcus Thompson’s family and loved ones,” the department said in a statement. “We will continue working to ensure justice is served.”
