Five Years Later, Investigators Renew Call For Tips In Banks County Dollar General Killing

COMMERCE, Ga. – Law enforcement agencies are renewing their call for information on the anniversary of the fatal shooting of Billy Lee Smith, who was killed the evening of January 26, 2021, outside a Dollar General store in Commerce. Smith was a father of five.

Smith was shot in front of the Dollar General located at 45 B Wilson Road in Banks County. Surveillance video shows the suspect inside the store shortly before the shooting. After exiting the store, the suspect shot Smith and fled the scene in a vehicle.

Investigators say the suspect was wearing a mask, which has complicated efforts to identify the shooter. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Commerce Police Department say the case remains active and that they continue to pursue leads.

Authorities are asking anyone with information that could help solve the case to come forward in hopes of bringing justice and closure to Smith’s family.
