The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office is recognizing one of its own for extraordinary bravery and service.
Corrections Officer Obbie Johnson has been named the 2026 Corrections Officer of the Year by the Florida Sheriffs Association, an honor reserved for officers who demonstrate exceptional courage, dedication, and selflessness in the line of duty.
Johnson’s actions on Thursday, May 1, 2025, exemplify those qualities. While on duty, an inmate alerted him that a woman had jumped from a bridge near the jail. Taking the report seriously, Johnson immediately went outside to investigate. He located the woman face down in Hogans Creek.
Without hesitation and despite the danger, Johnson entered the water and pulled the woman to safety. He then performed CPR until emergency medical personnel arrived. Thanks to his quick thinking and decisive actions, the woman survived.
Supervisors say Johnson’s heroism is not limited to that single moment. They describe him as a professional, compassionate officer who consistently goes above and beyond in his daily work with inmates.
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office will formally recognize Johnson as its Corrections Officer of the Year next month.
