St. Petersburg police have arrested a 43-year-old woman in connection with the death of her young son following a disturbing call that brought officers to a northeast St. Petersburg home.
According to the St. Petersburg Police Department, officers were called around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, January 27, to a residence in the 1700 block of Tanglewood Drive NE after reports of a person bleeding. When officers arrived, they were met by a 16-year-old girl who said she had just returned home from school and found her mother holding her 4-year-old brother on a bed. Police said blood was found throughout the house.
The child’s mother, identified as Diana Elizabeth Cullom, 43, was transported to Bayfront Hospital with multiple lacerations. Authorities said her injuries were self-inflicted and not life-threatening. She was released from the hospital overnight.
Cullom has now been charged with first-degree murder in the death of her son, Finley Cullom, 4.
Investigators said an autopsy conducted by the medical examiner determined the child did not suffer stab wounds. Instead, the cause of death was ruled suffocation.
The investigation remains ongoing as detectives continue to review the circumstances surrounding the child’s death.
