JACKSONVILLE, Florida – The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office announced that two men are now facing murder charges in connection with a fatal Christmas Eve shooting that claimed the life of a 55-year-old man.
On Wednesday, December 24, 2025, District 1 patrol officers responded to reports of a shooting on St. Augustine Road near Emerson Street. When officers arrived, they found Kenneth Lockhart suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Lockhart was pronounced dead at the scene before he could receive medical treatment.
Homicide Unit detectives immediately launched an investigation. Surveillance footage from the area showed Lockhart involved in an argument with two men shortly before the shooting. Investigators say the video captures both suspects firing multiple shots at Lockhart and then fleeing the scene on foot.
Detectives were able to quickly identify one of the suspects as 38-year-old Amen Hotep Mathis. Mathis was arrested in the early morning hours on Christmas Day.
The investigation continued, leading detectives to identify the second suspect as 60-year-old Gregory Lamar Woods. On Wednesday, January 28, 2026, members of the U.S. Marshals Task Force located Woods and took him into custody.
Both Woods and Mathis have been charged with murder and are currently being held in the Duval County Jail.
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office says detectives will continue working the case as they seek justice for Kenneth Lockhart and his family.
