COLUMBIA COUNTY, Fla. – A routine traffic stop early Saturday morning escalated into a dangerous high-speed pursuit that ended with a PIT maneuver and the arrest of a Miami man with a long history of license suspensions.
According to the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began at approximately 2:13 a.m. on Saturday, January 31, 2026, when Deputy Dawson attempted to stop a brown Jeep after it ran a red light at the intersection of U.S. 90 and SW Bascom Norris Drive.
Deputies say the driver refused to stop after emergency lights and sirens were activated and fled westbound on U.S. 90. As the pursuit continued under Interstate 75, the driver, later identified as Robert P. Cyron, 29, reached speeds of 87 miles per hour, then turned off the vehicle’s headlights and began traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes in an apparent attempt to evade law enforcement.
Once past SW Birley Avenue, Cyron continued fleeing at speeds that reached 108 miles per hour, deputies said.
The pursuit ended after Cyron turned off U.S. 90 onto County Road 137, where Deputy Dawson successfully performed a Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT) maneuver, bringing the Jeep to a stop. While deputies waited for backup, Cyron allegedly attempted to conceal his role as the driver by switching seats with the front passenger.
All three occupants were removed from the vehicle and evaluated by medical personnel. No serious injuries were reported.
Investigators determined Cyron had 24 prior driver’s license suspensions. He was arrested and booked into the Columbia County Detention Facility, where he is being held without bond.
Cyron faces charges of Fleeing and Eluding and Driving While License Suspended or Revoked (third or subsequent offense).
