Video Evidence Undercuts Self-Defense Claim, Jury Convicts Man in Auburndale Execution-Style Killing

AUBURNDALE, Florida – A jury has found Kyle Robert Herrington guilty of second-degree murder in the 2023 shooting death of Porchia Crossley in Auburndale, FL, following a trial that concluded Jan. 31, 2026.

The shooting occurred on Oct. 11, 2023, at approximately 8:45 a.m. in the area of 217 Century Boulevard. Officers with the Auburndale Police Department responded to reports of a shooting and found Crossley lying on the pavement with multiple gunshot wounds to the head. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said Herrington identified himself as the shooter and was still on the phone with 911 when officers arrived. He was secured and transported from the scene, where he later told detectives the shooting was justified under Florida’s Stand Your Ground law.

Investigators, however, located video evidence that contradicted that claim. According to police, the video showed Crossley approaching Herrington and the two exchanging words. As Crossley walked away toward her vehicle, Herrington followed and shot her three to four times in the head from behind, killing her instantly. Herrington was arrested and charged with second-degree murder.

During the investigation, detectives executed multiple search warrants to collect evidence, including firearms submitted for laboratory analysis and cell phone data extractions. Crime scene processing and evidence handling were conducted by the Forensics Investigations Unit of the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

Herrington chose to contest the charge and proceeded to a jury trial. Prosecutors with the State Attorney’s Office, 10th Judicial Circuit presented the case, resulting in the guilty verdict. Herrington is now awaiting sentencing.

Police said the conviction marks the third homicide conviction in January 2026 involving cases investigated by the Auburndale Police Department, citing partnerships with the Polk County Sheriff’s Office and the State Attorney’s Office.
