Homeowner Fires in Self-Defense During Attempted Burglary in Nassauville, Sheriff Says

NASSAUVILLE, Fla. — An attempted home burglary Wednesday night ended with a homeowner firing shots in self-defense, striking one suspect and leading to the arrest of another, according to the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded just before 8 p.m. to a residence on Clearwater Road after a homeowner reported that two suspects attempted to break into the house. During the incident, the homeowner fired a gun, striking a juvenile male suspect. Authorities said the juvenile was transported to a local hospital, where he remains in stable condition.

A second suspect, identified as Anson Shawn Drew, 18, of Fernandina Beach, fled the scene. With assistance from the sheriff’s office Drone Unit and K9 Unit, along with air support from the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, deputies located Drew a short time later. He was taken into custody and charged with two counts of burglary.

According to investigators, the homeowner reported hearing voices and movement outside the residence and then saw two individuals in the yard. One suspect forcibly opened the front door and shined a flashlight into the home. Detectives said the homeowner, fearing for their life, fired two shots.

Investigators determined the homeowner’s actions were justified under Florida’s Stand Your Ground law.

“Anyone who breaks into someone’s home should expect to get shot,” said Bill Leeper. “This is a serious crime with real consequences.”

Drew was booked into the Nassau County Jail and Detention Center on a bond exceeding $10,000. Authorities said the juvenile suspect will face charges pending the issuance of an arrest warrant.
