VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – A Volusia County jury has found 38-year-old Latravius Jacobs of Holly Hill guilty of First-Degree Felony Murder in connection with a 2023 carjacking that ended in a fatal crash. He was immediately sentenced to life in prison as a Habitual Violent Felony Offender.
The verdict followed a three-day trial stemming from events on December 14, 2023. Prosecutors said Jacobs stole a vehicle at gunpoint from a man in the parking lot of a Daytona Beach motel.
Approximately three minutes after the carjacking, Jacobs ran a red light at Mason and Ridgewood Avenue while traveling 91 miles per hour and collided with another vehicle. The impact caused the vehicle to launch into the air and flip several times. The victim died at the scene from injuries sustained in the crash.
The Daytona Beach Police Department investigated the case. Assistant State Attorneys Ashley McCarthy and Paiton Mizelle prosecuted the case for the State of Florida. The Honorable Kathryn Weston presided over the trial and imposed the sentence.
