Suspect Armed With Handgun Shot, Killed by Jacksonville Officers on Kaleel Road

JACKSONVILLE, Texas – A man suspected of driving a stolen vehicle was shot and killed by Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office officers late Tuesday night after he allegedly pulled a handgun during a foot chase on Kaleel Road, Sheriff T.K. Waters said.

The shooting occurred around 11:15 p.m. Tuesday, February 10, 2026, after Patrol Task Force officers in covert vehicles located a known stolen vehicle near 61st Street and Main Street. The suspect was inside the vehicle at the time.

According to Sheriff Waters and Undersheriff Shawn Coarsey, officers had previously encountered the same suspect in the same stolen vehicle two weeks earlier. During that incident, the suspect fled and was confirmed to be armed with a firearm.

On Tuesday, covert officers requested marked patrol units to follow the stolen vehicle. Officers tracked it to Kaleel Road, where investigators said the suspect turned off the vehicle’s lights and pulled into a driveway.

The suspect exited the vehicle and ran. Officers pursued him on foot. During the chase, Sgt. M. Howell deployed his TASER twice, though it is unclear whether the probes made contact.

Authorities said the suspect then pulled out a handgun. Sgt. Howell and Officer M. Higginbotham fired multiple shots.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not been released pending notification of next of kin.

The shooting marks the fourth officer-involved shooting involving the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office this year.

The State Attorney’s Office responded to the scene and is conducting an independent investigation. After that review is complete, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office will begin its internal investigation.
