Police Departments Opting for AI Tool to Write Reports

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office is introducing a new artificial intelligence-powered tool aimed at reducing paperwork and allowing deputies to spend more time focused on public safety.

The system, called Axon Draft One, assists deputies with report writing by generating a preliminary narrative based on audio recorded from a deputy’s body-worn camera.

At this time, the technology will be used only for non-criminal calls for service. The tool securely transcribes and organizes a deputy’s spoken account of an incident, helping streamline the report-writing process.

Because the system relies on recorded narration, deputies must clearly describe events and observations while on camera to ensure accurate documentation.

Deputies remain fully responsible for all reports. Each report must be carefully reviewed, edited, and approved before submission. The system also includes built-in prompts that flag areas where additional details may be needed, requiring deputies to make substantive edits to ensure accuracy.

“We are committed to embracing innovation and leveraging technology in ways that enhance operational efficiency,” said Sheriff Chad Chronister. “Axon Draft One is an example of how we continue to evolve, pairing advanced technology with proper training and oversight to enhance efficiency while maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and accountability. Our deputies remain fully responsible for every report, and this tool simply allows them to focus more time on protecting our community.”

Officials emphasized that all information processed through Draft One remains within Axon’s secure system and is not shared with public AI platforms.

The Sheriff’s Office says the initiative represents a balance between modern technology and accountability, helping reduce administrative workload while maintaining oversight and professional standards.
