JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office has released preliminary details and body camera video following an officer-involved shooting on Fox Tail Lane that resulted in the death of a 62-year-old man earlier this month.
According to JSO, the incident stems from an armed domestic disturbance reported on February 12, 2026, at a residence on Dunn Avenue. Deputies responded after the suspect’s wife reported that Jose Cabrera, described as intoxicated, held her down while armed with a knife and threatened to kill both her and himself.
Investigators said the victim was able to push Cabrera away before he left the residence in his vehicle. She provided officers with a description of the vehicle, Cabrera’s phone number, and advised he might be heading toward Fox Tail Lane.
An officer later contacted Cabrera by phone. During that conversation, Cabrera allegedly told police they would have to kill him before he returned to prison.
Just after midnight on February 13, Officers Rhoden, Griffis, and Morris located Cabrera sitting in his parked vehicle in a driveway on Fox Tail Lane. As officers approached, Officer Griffis observed a knife within Cabrera’s reach.
Police said officers attempted to communicate with Cabrera, but he immediately armed himself with the knife and exited the vehicle.
Officers repeatedly ordered Cabrera to drop the weapon. Instead, authorities say Cabrera advanced aggressively toward the officers while yelling, “Come on, shoot me!” while holding the knife.
All three officers discharged their department-issued handguns, striking Cabrera.
Officers then handcuffed Cabrera and began providing emergency medical aid until Jacksonville Fire Rescue personnel arrived. Cabrera was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.
JSO stated that had Cabrera survived, he would have faced charges including Aggravated Domestic Assault and Aggravated Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer.
As is standard procedure, the State Attorney’s Office will conduct an independent review to determine the legality of the officers’ actions. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office will also complete an internal review to ensure department policy was followed.
Both investigations remain ongoing, and final conclusions are pending.
