Jacksonville Man Charged With Felony Murder After Robbery Attempt Turns Deadly

Jacksonville, FL — A Jacksonville man has been charged with felony murder after an attempted armed robbery in 2025 resulted in the death of another suspect.

According to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, 45-year-old Damon Thomas was arrested Wednesday, March 4, 2026, in connection with the incident.

Authorities said Thomas was already being held in the Duval County Jail after his arrest in December 2025 on charges related to the molestation of a child.

The case stems from an attempted armed robbery on November 3, 2025, at a business on Baymeadows Road.

District 3 Patrol officers responded to the location after receiving reports of a robbery in progress. When officers arrived, they found 32-year-old Rhoderius Simmons in the parking lot suffering from a gunshot wound.

Simmons later died from his injuries.

Detectives with the JSO Homicide Unit, along with the Crime Scene Unit, launched an investigation into the shooting.

Investigators determined that Simmons and Thomas had entered the business together with the intent to rob the owner.

During the attempted robbery, gunfire was exchanged between the business owner and the two suspects.

Authorities said Simmons and Thomas fled the business after the shooting. Simmons collapsed in the parking lot, while Thomas drove away from the area.

On March 4, detectives obtained an arrest warrant charging Thomas with felony murder and other charges connected to the robbery attempt.

Thomas was re-arrested at the Duval County Jail, where he remains in custody.
