One Dead, Two Injured in Workplace Shooting at St. Augustine Construction Site

UPDATE: Investigators worked fast and have identified the suspect in this shooting as 20-year-old Yovany Lopez-Cobo. He is charged with second-degree murder in the death of one victim and attempted second-degree murder (2 counts) in reference to two other victims struck by gunfire.

The two victims transported to area hospitals are expected to recover from their injuries. Lopez-Cobo is in custody at the St. Johns County Jail.

St. Johns County, FL — One person is dead and two others were injured following a shooting Wednesday afternoon at a construction site in St. Augustine, according to the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded around 4:26 p.m. on March 4 to a reported shooting in a construction area near the intersection of Crimson Leaf Drive and Johns Island Parkway.

When deputies arrived, they located three male victims. Authorities said one of the men suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene despite life-saving efforts by deputies.

Two additional male victims were transported to area hospitals. Their conditions have not been released.

Investigators said the suspect fled the scene with another male in a vehicle.

At approximately 4:53 p.m., deputies located the suspect vehicle traveling westbound on State Road 206. Authorities stopped the vehicle at a Love’s Travel Stop, where the suspect and passenger were detained.

Both individuals were transported to the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division for questioning.

Officials said the suspect and victims are co-workers. Authorities also stated there is no threat to the community.

The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit is leading the investigation. The State Attorney’s Office responded to the scene as the investigation continues.
